Gurk cathedral

The 12^th century Romanesque basilica is among the most important buildings of European sacral art. During the course of its history, this place of worship, built as an episcopal church, has become a complete works of the most diversified epochs.

Straßburg castle

The construction of the Straßburg castle as episcopal residence goes back to the erector of the Gurk cathedral, Bishop Roman I. It soon became a powerful and representative building which was to express the endeavours of the bishops of Gurk for independence from the archbishopric of Salzburg in a decisive way.

Maria Saal cathedral

Maria Saal cathedral (approx. 12 km away): furniture museum near the priory, KÄRNTNER Freilichtmuseum (Carinthian open-air museum): museum village of old Carinthiaan farmhouses.

Castle Hochosterwitz

It was first mentioned in a deed in the year 860. The Sponheim dukes bestowed the hereditary office of the cup-bearer upon the family Osterwitz in 1209. The last cup-bearer of Osterwitz was taken prisoner during a Turkish invasion in 1475 and died in captivity leaving no descendants.

Magdalensberg

Today, after more than 50 years of systematic excavation work, the town on Magdalensberg represents one of the biggest Roman excavation sites of the Eastern Alpine region, with an open-air museum extending over more than three hectares.

The duke´s chair

The duke’s chair (approx. 12 km away)

A double throne made from Roman stone and pre-Romance workpieces: it was here that the duke who was installed on the Prince’s Stone in Karnburg swore his oath to the estates.
